Adventures in Internet Safety:
Learning Objectives: Students will understand that technological advancements create societal concerns regarding the practice of safe, legal, and ethical behaviors. Learners will recognize and practice responsible social and ethical behaviors when using technology, and understand the consequences of inappropriate use including internet access, personal security, and safety issues. (TEC.K-4.8.1.4 B.2)
The Internet is a great place. It allows us to go to places we possibly would never be able to visit in person. For example, we can learn about the T-Rex of the Sea at The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, watch live animals at a watering hole in the Tropical Zone's African Plains, view Winter, the Amazing Dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida, or even watch live penguins as they roam around an exhibit at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida without leaving your house or our school. You can even visit many local places like the Statue of Liberty, 5th Avenue, Times Square, the Paterson Falls, or even one of the many glorious New Jersey short points by visiting EarthCam's Website.
However, just like we need to stay safe when we are at museums and zoos visiting in person, we need to be safe while we are on the Internet. We need to follow many of the same safety rules when we are in both places. To learn some ways to stay safe when on the Internet, watch the mutlimedia presentation of the Internet Keep Safe Coalition's book, Faux Paw, The Techno Cat- Adventures in the Internet, as it is read to you by a second grade student about internet safety below.
